Posted:  14 September 2015

The UCISA Networking Group is pleased to announce the publication of a Secure Network Management Best Practice Guide.    The Guide has evolved from the UCISA Exploiting and Protecting the Network Best Practice Guide (last edition 2011).

The UCISA Secure Network Management Best Practice Guide provides information and guidance for a variety of audiences:

  • an IT Director may want to check their networking strategy against the headline topics outlined in the Summary and recommendations chapter;
  • a Network Manager may want to ensure they have controls in place to mitigate the threats outlined through the document;
  • colleagues in estates or facilitates management may want to familiarise themselves with the Internet of Things, Building Management and Systems and Industrial Control Systems/ Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems content;
  • and staff with an information security role may use this publication when evaluating technical security controls for their organisation’s network.

Additionally, a simple spreadsheet is available to help readers consider how their own institution is meeting recommendations made in the publication.

UCISA’s Best Practice Guide on Exploiting and Protecting the Network is intended to help universities and colleges maximise the potential of the network at their institutions in a safe and secure manner. There have been four editions; the last was issued in 2011

We are seeking a team or individual to undertake a revision of the Best Practice Guide, and to update it with new and relevant content on emerging technology areas including the Internet of Things and material on SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) Systems including BMS (Building Management Systems).  The author(s) would also be expected to provide, and link to, updated resources that are more widely available.

The project is expected to take three months, with a new Guide to be launched at the beginning of 2015.  Institutions/ individuals will be offered a total of £5k to cover a minimum of ten days’ work (including VAT).  Travel to project meetings is not required.
To revise the Exploiting and Protecting the Network Best Practice Guide we are seeking:

  • either one contributing HE/FE institution (fielding an individual or a  team of people),
  • or an author from an HE/FE institution,
  • or a suitably qualified independent consultant with extensive HE/FE experience.

If you would like to be considered for this project please review the consultancy document and send an expression of interest by email to by Wednesday 10 September 2014.
