Amber Miro

It is with great sadness that I write to advise that Amber Miro, Assistant Director, IT Services at the London School of Economics, died on Tuesday 6 March after a short illness. Amber was Chair of UCISA’s Support Services Group and a member of the UCISA Executive since September 2009. Her colleagues on the Executive and the Support Services Group Committee spoke of Amber’s ability to motivate and inspire those around her. Personally, I will remember her sense of humour and zest for life. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. amber miro
Amber’s colleagues at the LSE have set up a Virtual Scrapbook - a website where people can tweet, email and blog messages, post photos etc in memory of Amber who was a keen advocate of social media. You can make an entry on one of two ways. Either visit the site and click on “Submit” and fill out the webform (you can customise your post and add images but you will need to add your name and a valid email address as a security precaution) or simply send an email to this Tumblr account. For those of you with SmartPhones, there are Tumblr apps in both the iTunes and Android stores (search for Tumblr).

Many of you have asked about making a donation in Amber’s memory. Amber's partner has chosen Cancer Research as the charity that should benefit; online donations can be made on this Donate in Memory page.

UCISA will be making an annual award in Amber's memory. The intention is that the Award reflects much of Amber’s passion – it will aim to highlight innovative uses of either leading edge technology or social media. It is hoped that this will surface the creativity that exists within IT service departments to identify innovative solutions and to share Amber’s enthusiasm for both social media and new technology. Further details and entry criteria will be published later in the year.

Amber's obituary was published in the Times Higher Education on Thursday 29 March.
