Review of 2010

2010 has been a turbulent year and UCISA, through the work of its Executive, its Groups and the central office, has sought to address the needs of our community in these difficult times. This year we have:

  • Run 22 events on a range of topics and including three multi-day conferences;
  • Published resources on ITIL;
  • Continued to work with the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education on leadership development and improving management skills;
  • Lobbied Parliament and responded to three consultations on the Digital Economy Act;
  • Evaluated three other Government consultations to assess whether a sector response was required;
  • Worked with HESA to review the Destination of Leavers return and implement the recommendations from HEFCE’s report on Data Efficiency;
  • Carried out and published the fifth Technology Enhanced Learning Survey;
  • Provided advice to Government bodies on topics as diverse as counter terrorism activities and export of educational software;
  • Responded to the consultation on the future of JISC and worked with them as part of our ongoing partnership;
  • Worked with JANET (UK) on eduroam provision and use of the network for business and community engagement activities, and continued to represent the sector on the JANET Stakeholder Advisory Panel;
  • Commissioned enhancement of the Exploiting and Protecting the Network best practice guide, case studies on wireless networking and a study on the cost of IT downtime, all of which will be published in the New Year;
  • Established relationships with sister organisations representing Finance Directors, Estates Directors and Local Authority IT Directors with a view to fostering stronger ties and delivering efficiencies and benefits to the various organisations’ members.

The list above highlights just some of the work that UCISA has carried out on behalf of our members. A more formal annual report will be published in the New Year and presented at the Association’s AGM at the Management Conference in Edinburgh on 24 March 2011. We will seek to continue to deliver value for money for our members and will be reviewing the outcomes from the recent Top Concerns survey to inform our work in 2011 and beyond.

Finally I should like to take this opportunity to remind you that bookings are open for the Management Conference and events on Shared Services and Cloud Computing taking place in February, to thank you for your support in 2010 and to wish you, on behalf of the UCISA staff, all the best for Christmas and the New Year.

Peter Tinson
Executive Secretary
