Award for Excellence 2009 

Winner - Canterbury Christ Church University

The 2009 Award for Excellence, sponsored by Eduserv, has been won by Canterbury Christ Church University. Their submission focused on the development of the iBorrow project which looked to introduce a self service laptop loan scheme into the University's new library and learning centre. The project also aimed to collect data about how students were engaging with different learning spaces and technology.

The panel recognised that the project met a clear business need by providing access to laptop technology to a university population where laptop ownership is not common.

Highly commended

Of the other submissions, one was worthy of mention as being Highly Commended. The submission from Queen Margaret University described the implementation of an integrated student, visitor and staff smartcard for multiple uses across the institution including visual identification, access control, cashless purchasing, printing and self issue in the library. The project was commended for the high level of systems integration that was achieved and the resulting improvement in business processes.The extension of the system to the Students Union and the application to the Financial Services Authority in order to be able to achieve implementation in a separate organisation was also of note.
