UCISA and JANET(UK): Working together, promoting eduroam.
UCISA-NG are working closely with JANET(UK) to promote the use of eduroam throughout the UK academic sector. Members of NG, the Networking Group: have reviewed a number of new user focused guidance documents, briefings for senior management and recommended areas of development. This relationship is bringing forward specific deliverables which are directly relevant to the sector.
JANET is the UK provider of eduroam, formerly known as JANET Roaming, which allows network logon and Internet access at any eduroam-enabled site using own username and password; without the need for guest account to be provided. JANET's eduroam infrastructure enables participating organisations to offer secure JANET-connected guest network services over Wi-Fi, wired connection and at hot-desk workstations to students, staff and research users, at minimal cost.
Use of eduroam is at an all time high, with support available at more and more sites and more and more events. For example at the 'Client Computing in the future' event at the University of Huddersfield and at the 'Campus Network Infrastructure' event at Loughborough University full eduroam coverage was available.
In October 2010, the number connections to eduroam rose steeply to over 3 million a month.
In the same time period, the number of unique devices (a person may have an eduroam enabled laptop and smart phone) seen connecting to eduroam rose close to 40 thousand in the month.
