Opening Keynote: The Future of Client Computing - James Hargrave, Client Platform Services Group Manager at University College London (UCL) will give a keynote presentation on the future of client computing. The presentation will take a look at the current and future status of client computing in both the Higher Education world and beyond including desktop virtualisation (VDI), thin client, application delivery, the rise of mobile devices including smartphones and tablets and the old thorny question of standardisation vs freedom of choice in client devices including the question of support for Apple Macs. How easy was it to changing the Operating System whilst using virtual applications?

Mobile Oxford provides mobile web services to the staff, students and general public of Oxford. It was piloted as part of the JISC Erewhon project and is now developed as part of the Open Source 'Molly Project' (http://mollyproject.org) which is available for any institution wishing to deploy similar services. It solves many of the hard issues faced when Universities try to deploy mobile services such as device detection and classification, multiple device support, location finding, discrete systems integration and more. Tim Fernando will be speaking on its capabilities and the challenges, current and future in designing for the new world of mobile computing.

The role of Virtual Desktops in a Digital Workspace strategy - Adrian Young, Head of Digital Workspace Group at the University of York, talks about how they are using VirtualDesktops as part of their Digital Workspace strategy. This provides a moreflexible desktop service for the University whilst still maintaining the manageabilityfor the IT service.
