Support Services Group (SSG)



About the Support Services Group (SSG)

The Support Services Group brings together those with an interest in supporting, advising and training users of information, communication and learning technologies in HE. The SSG Committee aims to identify and share innovative and best practice, and connect and develop the IT support services community through:

  • Seeking out innovation – horizon scanning and identifying hot topics
  • Running events – conferences, symposia, workshops, webinars
  • Developing resources – case studies, good practice guides, toolkits
  • Monitoring practice – surveys, identifying trends, benchmarking
  • Connecting people – using email lists, blogs, webinars and events to support each other, share experience and best practice

The Support Services Group has a number of working groups focusing on particular areas. These are:

  • Academic Support Group – aims to identify areas of interest related to the use of learning technologies in support of learning and teaching activities within HE and is a forum for the discussion of, and the exchange of information on the development and use of technologies in teaching and learning.
  • Communication Group  – to promote discussion and support good practice about interacting with users, dealing with stakeholders, carrying out service evaluation, promoting and disseminating your service's activities.
  • Service Desk Group  – aims to identify areas of interest to staff involved in the delivery, management or planning of advisory services in IT departments, libraries and MIS departments and provide help, guidance and information in the areas, particularly on the use of technology which might assist with service desk activities.
  • User Skills Group – aims to promote the sharing of experience and good practice in end user IT training and skills development, particularly in higher education institutions in the UK. Also aim to identify areas of interest related to staff and student IT training, including accreditation.

Mailing List

The Support Services Group runs a mailing list ucisa-ssg@jiscmail.ac.uk which open to individuals from Full or Affiliate member organisations and provides a forum for sharing information and discussion on specific topics of interest to the Support Services Community. You can join by sending the following command to: jiscmail@jiscmail.ac.uk join ucisa-ssg firstname surname or by using the JISCMail Web interface.
