Supporting Institutional Decisions with Business Intelligence

19 September 2006
University of Bristol

Business Intelligence (BI) encompasses a wide range of applications and technologies for gathering, providing access to, and analysing data for the purpose of helping users make better decisions. The aim of this seminar is to draw upon existing data warehousing and reporting experience, show some evolving BI use within an HEI, and inform about the potential benefits BI can bring in terms of real-time reporting and providing the insight to help make better decisions.

The seminar is targeted at both a technical and a non-technical audience. It will have a focus on the concepts, benefits and possibilities for BI, rather than technical details.

The Edinburgh Enlightenment
[presentation-pdf]
Enlightenment comes through understanding and spreading knowledge. Like many institutions Edinburgh University has a wealth of data that is generated as a result of conducting the business of the institution. However, little of the data is in a form which enables understanding and decision making. Over the past 10 years Edinburgh has been building an infrastructure to support decision makers to use the knowledge we possess. Our approach has been piecemeal and pragmatic adding repositories to 'the warehouse' as we have gone along. The talk is aimed at enlightening you about our approach to enlightenment sharing some of the lessons we have learned along the way.

[presentation-pdf]
To build better customer relationships and manage recruitment and enrolment, we need a) effective reporting based on better customer data, and b) more effective systems and processes for collecting, maintaining and (in particular) integrating our customer data. The presentation will describe how LJMU have addressed b) through the implementation of CRM for student recruitment, linked to the student system to track learners from enquiry through to enrolment and beyond, and a) through the use of Oracle Balanced Scorecard at the strategic and Oracle Discoverer at the operational level

13:30-14:30 The Power to Know You're Making a Difference: Embracing Insight Initiatives
[presentation-pdf | whitepaper-pdf]
Services like Amazon.com, TiVo, and online banking have driven the expectation that technology will be thoughtfully used to better enable teaching and learning, student services, and institutional management. Moreover, they have driven the expectation that institutions will leverage "insight"--enterprise intelligence systems, data mining, and predictive analytics--to make a difference in how they teach and reach students, better customize services, and drive strategic planning and accountability efforts. During this presentation, we'll track similar movements in the commercial, government, and healthcare industries, and look at the implications and issues surrounding the search for insight in the world of education.
