Providing high quality and cost effective services is extremely challenging in an environment of conflicting demands.  To help meet this challenge Nottingham developed a programme to train its staff on how to get the most from suppliers with the objective of improving service levels, staff engagement and value for money.


The SUSTE-TECH Project: Sustainable technology in UK universities and colleges

This JISC funded SUSTE-TECH project examines the use of ICT in UK universities and colleges.  While the principle aim of this project is to improve ICT related energy consumption in UK FHE’s by encouraging the use of alternative sustainable ICT equipment, its overarching aims include examining sustainable alternatives in ICT design, manufacture and disposal. 
It is also hoped that this programme will provide a platform for long lasting change in how large institutions purchase, use and dispose of their ICT equipment.

A structured programme was put together for technical staff that provided a pathway through existing learning and development opportunities and, which together with other mandatory and optional activities, aimed to prepare staff for progression to management roles and help with succession planning during times of rapid change.


Enhancing the student learning experience with a virtualised desktop infrastructure

We are one of the first universities to use Virtual Desktop Infrastructure at large scale. The project has enabled students and staff to access the desktop environment 24/7 from anywhere. This has reduced our support, hardware and power costs whilst being a major success with students, who now have better access to the specialist maths & computing applications they require.


OSS Watch – assessing open source solutions for software procurement

The OSS Watch bi-annual survey on Open Source software revealed that there is an ever-increasing interest in open source software in the UK HE/FE sector. There are, however, challenges in assessing open source in a procurement process. This poster will show the key findings from the survey and show key pointers helping institutions evaluate open source solutions when procuring software.


London 2012 Olympics – coming soon to a university or college near you!  A big deal for IT Services?  ....  or just business as usual?

The poster will provide a meeting place for people whose institutions are involved in providing sporting venues, accommodation etc in the period around the London 2012 Olympics, with a view to collaborating to discuss IT related issues and solutions.


LERSIG (ALT’s Learning Environment Review Special Interest Group)

The University of Bradford is leading a Special Interest Group.  It has provided events and spaces to share experiences on effective methods, processes and procedures for evaluating whether our current institutional Learning Environments are fit for purpose.  Do they meet the needs of our 21st Century learners and the development of flexible and pedagogically sound curricula?  These discussions evolved from the ALT (Association for Learning Technology) 2009 Conference which identified a common need and desire at our institutions to evaluate our current learning systems in a period of rapid technological change.

IT Governance – how we are making it work

Moving to BB Learn 9

In recent user surveys our current VLE, based on Blackboard 8, was viewed as slow and clunky, and the University was seen to be falling behind other universities in the innovative use of eLearning. A VLE review project recommended that the current VLE be upgraded to Blackboard 9 to provide a modern, robust VLE for the University for years to come.  The poster describes the issues and challenges of moving to BB9.
